Cricket Formats and Competitions — How to Bet on Each

viptaka BPL and T20 Cricket Betting Markets

Cricket's three main formats — Test, ODI and T20 — each offer a different betting experience.

T20 is the fastest format. Every over matters and results can change in an instant. BPL is the most popular among Bangladesh's fans, while IPL and the T20 World Cup also generate strong interest. In this format, markets for match winner, highest runs and over/under are particularly active.

ODI fifty-over matches allow more time — the key question is whether a team can recover from a difficult position midway. Top batsman and partnership markets are also popular here.

Test cricket runs over five days — bets here cover both the possibility of a draw and an outright result. Innings runs, pitch behaviour, and weather all influence the odds. Fans stay equally engaged across all three formats when Bangladesh Tigers are playing.

Football draws the second-largest betting interest in Bangladesh after cricket. In cricket, markets shift more frequently mid-match because odds update instantly when wickets fall. In football, markets stay relatively stable before a goal. Other sports — such as tennis or kabaddi — run on simpler markets. All of these can be bet on together in viptaka's sports section.

Popular betting markets — what happens in each market

In viptaka's cricket betting section, a single match offers several different markets. Below is a brief introduction to seven familiar markets:

Match Winner

Choose which of the two teams will win. There are no draws in T20, so there are only two options — Team A or Team B.

Simplest market

Toss Winner

Which team will win the toss before the match — Team A or Team B. Odds are generally close for both sides.

Quick decision

Top Batsman

Pick which player will score the most runs for a team. Odds in this market shift as wickets fall.

Active throughout the innings

Total Runs Over/Under

Whether runs scored will be above or below a set line — for example, whether the first innings will go over or under 160 runs.

Numbers-based market

Multi Bet

Combine selections from multiple matches. If all selections are correct, the payout increases; one wrong selection and the entire bet is lost.

Higher return potential

Top Bowler / Most Wickets

Pick which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. The mix of pace and spin and the pitch type play a big role here.

Bowling-focused market

Player of the Match

Which player will be named Man of the Match — both batting and bowling performances are taken into account.

Long-wait market

How to read and understand odds

Betting odds are written in three different formats — decimal, fractional, and American. viptaka generally uses the decimal format, though other formats may also appear. Below are three representations of the same price:

Example 1 — the same odds in three formats

Team A to win, bet ৳500. Decimal 3.00 = Fractional 2/1 = American +200. If the bet wins, the return is ৳1,500 (৳1,000 profit + ৳500 stake). If it loses, ৳500 is gone.

Example 2 — odds for the favourite

Team B to win. Decimal 1.25 = Fractional 1/4 = American -400 (American minus odds show how much you need to stake to win ৳100). On a ৳500 bet, the return is ৳625 (৳125 profit).

Decimal odds are straightforward to read — multiply them by your stake to get the total return. The team with lower odds is considered more of a favourite; higher odds mean the outcome is seen as less likely.

Live in-play betting — odds change when a wicket falls

In-play betting lets you place bets while a match is in progress. In cricket this is particularly engaging, as every wicket, boundary, or maiden over can shift the situation.

Say Team A is 140 for 5 in the first innings — the odds for the batting side may shorten. If two more wickets fall in the next over, the odds swing again. On viptaka's in-play dashboard, markets are updated after every ball.

Over-by-over totals, the over in which the next wicket falls, or the number of runs in a specific powerplay — these smaller markets are more commonly available in live betting.

To bet responsibly, set yourself a limit before each betting session. Detailed guidance is available on the Responsible Gaming page.

Practical tips for cricket betting

1

Understand the format before choosing a market

T20 has only 20 overs, so smaller markets close quickly. In ODIs and Tests there is more time, so get familiar with the main market first.

2

Start with one market

If you are new, start with the two simplest markets — match winner or toss. Combining multiple markets can come later.

3

Be careful with multi-bets

Multi-bets offer higher potential returns, but if one selection is wrong the entire bet is lost. Think carefully before combining more than 3 selections.

4

Don't rush in in-play

Odds change fast in live betting. Rather than placing a bet immediately after a wicket, let the situation settle before making a decision.

5

Keep betting as part of your entertainment

Cricket betting is a source of enjoyment — play within a set budget, and focus on enjoying the match rather than making winning your only goal.

Football and other sports betting

Alongside cricket, viptaka also offers football betting. In football, match results are generally settled within 90 minutes, and odds shift gradually based on whether goals are scored. The immediate impact of a single event — like a wicket in cricket — is somewhat less pronounced in football.

Sports like tennis, kabaddi, or badminton usually have fewer markets — mainly limited to match winner and set-based markets. Cricket has the widest variety of markets.

Cricket betting FAQ

T20 is only 20 overs, so markets close quickly and odds shift frequently. ODI is 50 overs — there is more room for the match situation to turn around mid-way. In Test cricket, five days of play make markets more complex — a draw is possible and weather and pitch conditions have a significant effect. The types of markets available differ slightly across each format.

A multi bet combines multiple selections. The odds for each selection are multiplied together to form the total odds. For example, if three selections have odds of 1.60, 1.70 and 1.80, the total odds are approximately 4.90 — a ৳100 bet returns ৳490, but only if all three selections are correct. If one is wrong, the entire ৳100 stake is lost.

In in-play betting, odds are updated after every wicket, boundary and maiden over. When a wicket falls, the batting team's chances of winning are considered lower, so their odds increase. If a bowler is bowling consistently well, the fielding team's odds shorten. Some markets may be temporarily suspended between overs.

The over/under market sets a specific number (the line) — for example, total runs in the first innings: 160. If you think the runs will be more than that, choose "over"; if you think it will be less, choose "under". At the end of the match, whichever side the actual run total falls on wins. In the event of a tie, the stake is generally returned.

The basic structure is the same — markets such as match winner, toss and top batsman are available in both. However, as the IPL is a larger international league, it offers more markets and more active odds. Since BPL is Bangladesh's domestic league, having knowledge of local players' form can be an advantage.
